We’re on a classic road trip making our way to Texas to view the eclipse - to maximize our chance of sunny skies. One of our stops was with Lon’s brother in northwest Arkansas. Crystal Bridges, in Bentonville (home of Walmart) was a short trip away, so we went.
The museum is a short “art walk" from downtown Bentonville, with a number of art pieces along the way.

“Maman” (French for “Mama”) is a huge spider sculpture by Louise Bourgeois. |

A pond filled with floating reflective spheres.
Along with the usual visual art work expected in an art museum, there are also a few “installation art” pieces.
“Infinity Mirror Room” by Yayoi Kusama is a room full of lighted polka-dot balls that change colors and are reflected in a multitude of mirrors. We’ve seen similar installations by the same artist at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh. |
You are allowed one minute in the room before you have to exit. It can be a disorienting experience! |
“Plexus No. 27” by Gabriel Dawe is a “string-art” installation in one of the stairwells. |
A temporary traveling exhibition, “Exquisite Creatures” by Christopher Marley was our main reason for visiting the museum. The artist uses natural objects to make visually stunning pieces. Most of the art uses butterflies, moths, and beetles, but birds, fish, seashells, frogs, snakes, and rocks are also found in his art.
"Pyre Prism". Most of the designs are highly symmetric. |

A piece made of of brightly colored beetles. Close-up look below. |
“Inca”, a quilt-like piece composed of Urania leilus moths from Peru. A close-up view of a “block” (below) makes the moths more obvious. |
“Evolvement” uses whole birds. These are all color variants of the same species, the Atlantic canary, Serinus canaria. |
A large triptych made of sea urchin and sand dollar shells. Close-up below.
