This morning we decided to rent cross-country skis and ski the Upper Terraces Drive, which is closed to vehicles in the winter. I hadn't been on x-c skis for at least 20 years, and the equipment has improved since I bought my skis in 1973 (mine are wood). The route was a bit more challenging than I would have liked for a first outing -- a relatively steep 200 ft climb, then a gentler, but still challenging for the beginner, slope returning to the start. The route includes a nice overlook of the valley, and several interesting hot springs.

We've successfully made it to the top. |

This fissure, White Elephant Back Terrace, is not longer active, but you can tell from the melted snow that it still has heat. The name comes from a side view that apparently looks like an elephant in profile. |

By the time we climbed the hill, we needed to shed a few layers. |

Orange Mound Spring from the side. |

Lon thought that this view of Orange Mound Spring should be named "Shaggy Dog" Spring, others thought that "Walrus" was a more appropriate name. |
