Yellowstone in Winter - Part 13 - Cross-Country Skiing

Sunday, 28 January 2018

This morning we decided to rent cross-country skis and ski the Upper Terraces Drive, which is closed to vehicles in the winter. I hadn't been on x-c skis for at least 20 years, and the equipment has improved since I bought my skis in 1973 (mine are wood). The route was a bit more challenging than I would have liked for a first outing -- a relatively steep 200 ft climb, then a gentler, but still challenging for the beginner, slope returning to the start. The route includes a nice overlook of the valley, and several interesting hot springs.

We've successfully made it to the top.
This fissure, White Elephant Back Terrace, is not longer active, but you can tell from the melted snow that it still has heat. The name comes from a side view that apparently looks like an elephant in profile.
By the time we climbed the hill, we needed to shed a few layers.
Orange Mound Spring from the side.
Skiing around Orange Mound Spring.
Lon thought that this view of Orange Mound Spring should be named "Shaggy Dog" Spring, others thought that "Walrus" was a more appropriate name.
