Trails & Trees - Part 12 - Glacier National Park

Monday, 14  & Tuesday, 15 August 2017

I had worked on these photos last week, but somehow, yesterday I skipped ahead to the Hiawatha Trail. So even though it’s a bit out of order, there are three posts coming for Glacier National Park.

On the Road in Glacier National Park - Going-to-the-Sun Road

Coming down from Drumheller in Alberta, Canada, we were driving through thick smoke. Just before the US/Canada border, we exited the smoke and the Rockies were just off to the west. Surprise!
Mountain at St Mary entrance. I liked the bands of red rocks.
The Sprague fire on 14 August 2017. By the time I’m writing this (3 September), the fire had enlarged and had closed a major section of Going-to-the-Sun Road, as well as requiring evacuations of lodges, campgrounds, and services in the park. (On Labor Day weekend, no less.)  On 31 August the fire consumed the Sperry Chalet, an historic backcountry lodge.
A morning view of St Mary Lake.
Morning light while driving up the west side of Logan Pass.
Jackson Glacier.
Road maintenance slowed travel through the park with major delays at several points.
On Monday we took a hike around Johns Lake.
Falls along McDonald Creek.
Doe and fawn along McDonald Creek.
Virginia is for bug lovers.
