Trails & Trees - Part 22 - Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks

Monday, 28 August 2017

These two jointly managed parks hold the world's largest (not tallest) trees -- the Giant Sequoias.

The General Grant Grove is in Kings Canyon National Park. These are the “Twin Sisters” at the grove’s parking lot. You can tell from the traffic barricades and pedestrians that these massive trees are not as tall as the redwoods, and they have a distinctive profile.

Sequoias have interesting tops. Most have been damaged by storms, fires, and insects, and take on a ragged appearance.
Down the road (“Generals Highway”) in Sequoia National Park is the world’s largest tree -- “General Sherman”.
The base of General Sherman -- 36 ft (11 m) diameter at breast height.

The squirrels find pine cones very tasty.
