Trails & Trees - Part 20 - Redwood National and State Parks

Friday, 25 August 2017

Redwood National and State Parks is a co-managed set of parks that includes Redwood National Park and Jedidiah Smith Redwoods, Del Norte Coast Redwoods, and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Parks. The combination stretches for about 50 miles along the Pacific coast and the coastal mountains.

“Big Tree” was one of the original attractions of the Redwoods area. It is large, but far from the tallest redwood.

As the signpost at Big Tree shows, there are many big trees in the area.
Looking up at redwoods along the Ah-Pah Trail. The middle tree suffered damage many years ago and now four new trees are growing from the top of the first tree. Redwoods also sprout from burls on the side of trees and roots -- highly unusual for conifers.
Prairie Creek also has a resident elk herd.
