Trails & Trees - Part 18 - Crater Lake National Park

Wednesday, 23 August 2017

We spent a day visiting Crater Lake. Much of the west side of the park was closed for forest fires and road construction.

Our first contact with Crater Lake, with Wizard Island in the middle. The air was thick with smoke from nearby forest fires.
Another view of Crater Lake and Wizard Island from the southern side of the lake.
Another, very small, island in the lake is called the “Phantom Ship”.
A closer look at the Phantom Ship.
The east side of Crater Lake. The yellow rocks near the middle of the photo are called “Pumice castle”.
A panoramic view from the east side of Crater Lake.
Vidae Falls are on the East Rim Drive.
We took a short hike at the end of Pinnacles Road to see the Pinnacles (duh!).
The Pinnacles were formed by volcanic vents pushing their way through ash deposits. The steam hardened the ash into rock, and then the ash eroded away, leaving the vents.
