Trails & Trees - Part 19 - Diamond Lake

Tuesday, 22 August & Wednesday, 23 August 2017

While visiting Crater Lake, we camped for three nights at Diamond Lake just to the north in the Umpqua National Forest (Oregon). The lake has several campgrounds and other facilities, as well as good access to a number of trails. Major forest fires were impacting this region, and several trails and roads were closed.

The opposite shore of Diamond Lake was almost completely obscured by smoke.
A 12-mile paved bike trail encircles the lake. Here the trail went through fireweed.
In a few places, the lake was bordered by large marshy areas.
At the south end, a “humpbacked” bridge went over Silent Creek.
Silent Creek.
The Visitor Center had a “tree cookie” from a 4-ft diameter Douglas-fir. It was nearly 600 years old when it toppled in 1995. Although this is a large (and old) tree, it pales in comparison to the redwoods and sequoias we saw later.
The road is straight (in parts) and the trees are tall.
Smoke and water make for dramatic sunset.  Barely visible at the far left is Mt Bailey.
